Illustrations of Various Keys & How To

Hold Them In The FRA-2001 / AutoCode / AutoMaster Vise

NOTE: ALL keys must be inserted to the back of the vise. It does not matter which side of the vise you use to cut the key (the base of each side is calibrated to be within .001" of the other side).

When cutting single sided keys, the "DOT" side of the vise (with the two drill indents on the top of it) should be used. If you are cutting a double-sided key, either side can be used; however, keys may tip up or down in the vise, in which case you should use the wide / non-dot side of the vise. All photos on the pages below are shown using the wide / non-dot side of the vise.

Before going into individual keys & their loading, check out the example below of correct & incorrect key loading with a TR47 key blank:

This TR47 key will be cut incorrectly, because it is incorrectly loaded into the vise. The user clamped the key by the milling in the blank. The blade of the key must touch the back of the vise, as shown in the picture below:

Look at the differences in the amount of the key blank that is being gripped by the vise. EVERY key cut on the machine must be inserted to the back of the vise (all the way towards the user).
